In LA filmmaker Rodney Ascher's ROOM 237, we hear from people who have developed far-reaching theories and believe they have decoded the hidden symbols and messages buried in the late director's film. Carefully examining The Shining inside out, and forwards and backwards, ROOM 237 is equal parts captivating, provocative and pure pleasure. It gives voice to the fans and scholars who espouse these theories, reworking the film to match their ideas and intercutting it with layers of dreamlike imagery to illustrate their streams of consciousness. Sometimes outrageous, always engaging, the words of the interviewees are given full force by Ascher's compelling vision. Also featured at the 2012 Sundance, Cannes and Toronto film festivals. Opens in March 2013 through IFC Midnight. (104 min.)

Some of the theories are far-fetched, and the documentary does lag. Despite these flaws, and its under-produced, amateurish feel, Room 237 does its job. It intrigues and it reminded me of why I loved The Shining in the first place. The theories presented range from a confession of filming the 'faked' moon landing, hidden analogies representing World War II and even the genocide of the American Indians. These messages are seen in various sources, from the posters /paintings on walls, the numbers used in the film, the props in each scene to the broken continuity between shots. We never see the interviewees, preventing us from identifying or personalising these stories, instead the focus is on the footage and the alleged proofs.

Although some interesting points are made it is hard to take every connection seriously. It is possible to see these embedded messages especially if you are connecting them to recent historical influences, but historical context can be read in all movies if you are looking for it.

The most interesting part of this film is the way in which people interact, relate, and interpret, as they make connections through the placement of objects, colours and settings. If I had watched The Shining over 50 times, would I too create 'hidden' meanings and discover underlying messages? We know Kubrick was a creative master in the field, but could exploring The Shining in such detail ruin the very mystery he was striving to achieve?

Over 30 years later Kubrick and they are still searching...job done.

Room 237 is quite unlike any documentary I've seen before, and while that is absolutely an earnest compliment, it's also to a degree a good thing that this film's personality is a singularly unique one. To have its narrative style and aesthetic common place among non-fiction works would frankly be maddening, but if I suppose if you're as die hard a fan of Stanley Kubrick's seminal horror masterwork The Shining as those interviewed, such a feeling is quite fitting.

That said, I was, ironically, possessed – forced to mull (obsessively so) – over how to critique this film; how to approach each ideal, the linkage between themes, the overarching nuances explored and most importantly how to fairly approach the passionate ramblings of some serious cinephiles. To judge each contributor on the validity of their personal perspectives is a pointless endeavour, not only because these obsessive fans are unwavering when it comes to their angle, but because the film approaches them in a way that if debunking were considered, it would quash the entire soul of the film.

But I immediately digress, what is Room 237 even about, you may ask. I've already mentioned Kubrick's The Shining and at its heart, this film is really about only that. Director Rodney Ascher collects five or so rabid admirers of the famed Stephen King adaptation and simply lets them loose to explain their various theories of the hidden themes behind the original film. The Holocaust, the massacre of the American Indians, the moon landing, repressed sexuality – it's all there naked for you to interpret as you will.

The moon landing theory in particular – that Kubrick directed the famed footage and used hidden themes in The Shining to orchestrate his confession –is utterly ludicrous in more ways than one, the smallest of which isn't that originally that whole theory stemmed from a 2002 mockumentary. And the fact that this individual repeatedly claims to have "proved" his ideal is grating to say the least. However in a way it's all a fascinating examination into the mind of a conspiracy nut, so in that way the film succeeds, but as to something greater hidden behind the façade of The Shining it's, well, still engrossingly asinine.

For me, it was the broader, uniting themes that proved the most provocative such as a segment which focuses on how to approach the past and that, in fact, the past doesn't exist, only the present. Similarly when more than one of these interviewees latch on to something of importance (even though they believe the hidden meaning to be different, such as the number 237) it certainly makes you think. Kubrick was absolutely the type of director to include certain thematic elements towards a greater end. So when we hear one person who believes baking powder with the face of a Native American holds bearing and one who believes it's the Tang containers, it all comes off as deliciously absurd.

In spite of the utter uniqueness of Room 237 and its tweaking of the documentary format, the shortcomings are numerous and unavoidable. The most egregious of these stems from the mere stylistic choices by director Ascher. In addition to what become monotonous repeats of scenes from The Shining, the various hypotheses are visually represented with a genuinely odd collection of footage from other cinematic works. The editing is all very impressive but the choices made do the film very little service.

Ascher also makes the perplexing decision to never show his subject's faces. Now, this may have been a subversive way of complimenting the supposed enigma that is The Shining but simply presenting these folks would have gone a long way to further establishing their unique identites. Not to mention that until they relapse into specifics of their individual doctrine, and not just gushing over the film, it was very difficult to distinguish between who was presenting which point at any given time. The favouring of specific arguments from a screen time perspective also seemed at odds with what Room 237 is trying to achieve.

The purest geek-out moment for any fan of The Shining has to be near the climax where it's revealed an exclusive screening of the film was held which played both the regular version and one in reverse. Both of these versions where then superimposed and the resulting coincidences are just damn cool. From a "Hitler moustache" fade (bear with me) to mouths lining up with a television screen, it's a very pure example of finding further entertainment in a film that has already provided so much. For fans as avid as those featured in this documentary (or even for those with a strong admiration or general interest in cinema) Room 237 is required viewing and best viewed for that matter bookended by the masterpiece itself.

'Behind the Candelabra'. Soderbergh's directional flair is evident. Douglas and Damon are both great. Beyond that, /shrug.

As a huge fan of Soderbergh's films, I ultimately don't know what drew him to this project, as it wasn't evident in what I saw by any means.

Soderbergh is one of the worst directors to tackle a love story, but the countless oddities, the fabulous glitz, and the stunning performances are hypnotic.

Part of the magic in Soderbergh's thoroughly entertaining biopic on the life of flamboyant piano virtuoso Liberace comes from the way it strives to be as free-spirited, wily and simply irresistible as its subject.

Michael Douglas dazzles as Liberace, hard to imagine a more dynamic screen performance this year. Can this really be the hard nosed heart-throb who played Gordon Gecko?

Regardless of the story's degree of historical accuracy, no doom-laden celebrity biopic has ever featured so much salacious fun. Nor has there been a film quite this entertaining all year.

What lasts longest in the mind is not the film's bold gay love scenes but its affectionate tip of the hat to a great, unapologetic American eccentric.

This biopic about the pianist-showman Liberace may look almost painfully camp, and sometimes it is, but it's also a remarkably honest depiction of an intimate relationship.Soderbergh exposes Liberace's subterfuge with knowing winks to the fact that if the performer were alive today, he'd be here, he'd be queer and we'd all be used to it.Buffed to a typical HBO high gloss, Candelabra is a visual feast. It shines brightest in those moments where it captures the rhythms of a relationship in its first blush of affection and its seemingly inevitable collapse.

Have not seen any of the previous film of Lenny Abrahamson, or seen Jack Reynor acting before, but having watched 'What Richard Did' I will be looking out for the follow up work of both of them. From the wonderful character description and built up, to the gut wrenching second part of the film, this is a gripping study of a young man's moral code which is challenged on the face of adversity.

This Irish feature seems to aim for the ice-cold detachment of Bruno Dumont but ultimately comes off more like a well performed after-school special. It's title character is a popular young Dublin rugby player who accidentally kills another teen in a drunken brawl. Director Lenny Abrahamson opts for the usual easy targets wheeled out by conservatives, (drinking, underage sex, foreign influences) rather than exploring the dog-eat-dog culture of it's South Dublin middle-class setting. Jack Reynor is impressive in the title role but it's a film that feels indecisive rather than ambiguous.

Director Pablo Larraín shoots the production like a documentary. He utilizes U-matic video tape, the kind used by newscasts in the 80s, to give the film the look from that era. At times it's a bit too grubby as the production almost looks ugly. He doesn't even utilize widescreen so news footage from 1988 is interspersed with fresh material. It's integrated so perfectly I often didn't notice the difference. He even showcases actual anti-Pinochet commercials with new scenes of them shooting the ad. The clips are full of people dancing and clapping urging the viewer to vote "No" in cheerful song. These displays are surprisingly light, particularly when contrasted with the reality of Pinochet's administration. The unexpected lighthearted tone is part of the film's brilliance but it's also the way it contrasts with an underlying climate of terror.

this is a very interesting film. the acting was wonderful and the dialogue very well written. as historical dramas go, this film was far more historical than it was drama, almost to the point of feeling like a documentary, but it carried enough interesting thematic elements and social commentary to make it very worthwhile.

Larrain does a fine job of making No look and sound authentic to its time period, although the VHS-quality photography, all washed-out with colors bleeding together as camcorders did in the '80s, is an occasional irritant.

It's clear that the language of advertising has become universal, and that political commodities can be sold like soap. But toppling a dictatorship? Now there's a story.NO is an important film - especially for people too young or too far removed from Pinochet's "Dirty War" to remember how horrifying the situation was in Argentina during the '70s and '80s. Bernal's screen presence goes a long way in making the movie workShooting the entire film on video equipment of the era gives No some visual snap but it is very much a pedestrian, by-the-numbers docu-drama tale, with the emphasis on the former rather than the latter.A political drama, a personal drama, a sharp-eyed study of how the media manipulate us from all sides, No reels and ricochets with emotional force.

Powerfully candid and sincere, "The Gatekeepers" opens the door of the Shin Bet, Israel's secret service, and airs all of its dirty laundry, but what truly makes it remarkable is that the men being interviewed are all former heads of the Shin Bet. Creative in its design of format for an informative documentary, the filmmaker delivers graphics and animated reenactments that immerse the viewer in the stories. Drawing ties to what our secret agencies may also be up to, it is uncanny how much of this resonates into our lives, even if the events being focused on have no real relation to the U.S. besides peace talks headed by the Clinton administration. As intriguing as the film is, take away the graphics and wonderfully sound designed actual footage and what you have is talking heads, which, not ideal, still makes for some attention grabbing material.

With keen insights that go beyond the Arab-Israeli conflict, "The Gatekeepers" is a very incisive documentary that consists of interviews with six former heads of Shin Bet, the Israeli security agency tasked with overlooking the occupied territories and attempting to stop future terrorist attacks which are impossible to always predict, much less prevent, as it is very difficult to predict how a single human being will always act. And like in the opening conversation, one interviewee points out that there are more than two possible outcomes to every military action, not to mention consequences down the line which he tries to tell his civilian bosses about. While one would assume new technology would make the job easier, that also comes with its own unique set of drawbacks, as another interviewee thinks back fondly on the days they relied on human intelligence.

Even the archival footage is fascinating in itself as it documents incidents those of us living outside of Israel have probably never heard of and form a continuing part of the narrative that starts with Israel's triumphant victory in the 1967 Six Day War, followed by it assuming custody of new territories and new peoples. Ironically, that is the beginning of a perpetual headache that as can be seen here can only be managed, not solved. In the end, the only solution these hardened military men can find is to talk with their opposite numbers, even as the conversation is currently dominated by fanatics.

"Gimme the Loot" starts with Sophia(Tashiana Washington) and Malcolm(Ty Hickson) pocketing as many cans of spray paint as they can handle from a hardware store, with Champion(Meeko) driving the getaway car. Their streak of success continues with their tagging a roof with their handles. But then are angry to find the following morning that a competing crew has painted over it. In order to make a name for themselves and to get revenge against them and Mets fans everywhere, Sophia proposes tagging the giant apple in Citi Field which rises every time the Mets hit a home run. And Malcolm has a contact who can let them in. But that's going to take $500 which they don't currently have. So, Sophia goes to collect an unpaid debt while Malcolm goes to see his employer.

"Gimme the Loot" is a funny, vibrant and fresh caper comedy. As this was probably filmed on a limited budget, first time writer-director Adam Leon makes the most of it by showing quite the talent for composing shots. That especially extends to depicting fast-paced New York City where even the largest dreams are possible(although maybe not a large soda in the near future) but don't try to lose sight of what is closest to you. That's true even in a divided city, just not evenly so, as there is some mix between the classes, especially on the subway, Sophia and Malcolm's favorite mode of transportation. And with all of the corporate graffiti we have to deal with every day, what's wrong with a little personal expression? Just don't mind the petty larceny, and enjoy the rocking cool soundtrack.

'Gimme the Loot'. Three likeable leads including the city of New York, which is very much a character in its own right.

A slim, low-budget coming-of-age tale whose richness lies entirely in its interstices. A keenly observed work that celebrates the unfettered joys of youth, and rewards by reminding of the power of a simple tale told well.Charming and engaging low-budget indie with a witty script, likeable characters, a strong sense of time and place and a pair of terrific performances from its two young leads.

Bolstered by a low-key but assured aesthetic and a soundtrack of vintage soul and doo-wop, the film is infectiously enjoyable, with frequently amusing insights and an affable shagginess.

The movie is unpolished, and it matters not a jot, because Leon has written super roles for these kids and invests their relationship with such sly feeling.

In 2006, an Iceland-based outfit called The Sunshine Press launched the website WikiLeaks.org. As run by Australian Internet activist Julian Assange, the site's mandate involved regularly publishing top-secret documents and covert information, often regarding governments and their respective military operations. As might be expected, this set off a firestorm between those who admired the organization's bravado and resourcefulness, and those who argued, not unjustly, that the dissemination of data regarding such events as the U.S. war in Afghanistan could put untold numbers of lives at risk. I didn't learn much new, and I really enjoyed the story in sequence. The storytelling is compelling, and the graphics great.
We Steal Secrets deals with the complexity of truth, personalities, and the complex world that's governed by governments.

Wikileaks has been at the forefront of reporting the truth about classified documents for many years now. We Steal Secrets is a highly engaging documentary about the infamous site. This is an in depth documentary that tells an interesting story about the legacy of Wikileaks. The film features interviews from the people involved with the site along with journalists and government officials. I found this documentary to be quite captivating and thrilling due to the fact that Wikileaks has been at the heart of much controversy. The film is not perfect, but it does manage to make you ask questions about the issues the film exposes. The documentary has one big problem, it doesn't interview the founder himself, and it merely uses stock footage interviews to tell his side of the story, instead of conducting a new interview for the film. This is nonetheless a worthwhile documentary. The film makes you think about what Wikileaks does and if what they're doing is right or wrong. In many cases what they do is the right thing, but in other cases, it can compromise Allied soldiers fighting in the field. So this film gives us an insight into that aspect of the film, and makes you ask many questions about the site. We Steal Secrets is a good film, but it could have been done better of course. Wikileaks has always been at the source of the truth, but this one just could have been done better. For what it is, it's worth seeing, but in the end you can't help but realize that there could have been more effort put into telling this story. Nonetheless, We Steal Secrets is entertaining and quite thrilling, but isn't a standout documentary that should have been better.

An extremely nerve-wracking thriller, where Mads Mikkelsen is fantastic as a man going through a terrifying ordeal. However, it is impossible to overlook some implausibilities, especially the character staying in the town against all good sense and the ridiculous ending.

Having lost his teaching job, Mikkelsen finds himself working in a daycare center at which he is the sole male member of staff. After escorting home his neighbor's daughter (Wedderkopp), the child develops a crush on him. When he sensibly spurns her affections, she badmouths him to the owner of the centre, claiming he exposed his genitals to her. Despite protesting his innocence, Mikkelsen is relieved of his position and becomes shunned by the local community, including his closest friends. The more he fights his corner the more ostracized he finds himself with his detractors' actions becoming increasingly aggressive.

Thanks to a tabloid media desperate to create headlines, the way adults, and particularly males, interact with children has changed forever. Twenty years ago, were a child to smile at a grown man he would most likely smile back and not give it a second thought. Now we're terrified that a harmless friendly gesture could be misinterpreted as something sinister. Parents have become over-protective, terrified by the myth of hordes of child-catchers roaming the land waiting to snatch any kid who plays outside their house. The reality is that children have never been safer, especially if you're fortunate enough to live in the west. Yes, abuse does occur but it's almost always perpetrated by a family member, not some stranger lurking outside the school gate. There was a time when an adult's word meant more than a child's but that's been turned on it's head now. This is the situation Mikkelsen finds himself in. Even when the child admits she lied it's too late, the adults have made their mind up and do their best to convince her the lie did actually happen.

Like the great social dramas of the fifties, this is a film which boils your blood at man's ignorance to his fellow man. You really feel the anger and desperation thanks to Mikkelsen's fantastic performance and Vinterberg's direction. It's not a showy movie by any means but it's full of great moments. An early visit to the father of the "victim" is brilliantly played by Mikkelsen and Larsen. The father's emotion is torn between whether to believe his friend or his daughter but when his wife arrives home he suddenly flies into a rage for her benefit, threatening to kill Mikkelsen if he ever comes near his family again. A violent altercation in a supermarket recalls 'On the Waterfront' as Mikkelsen defiantly demands to collect his groceries despite receiving a beating. There's a great moment of tension when the child turns up on Mikkelsen's door asking to play with his dog, oblivious to the trouble she has caused.

'The Hunt' is a masterful piece of film-making, powerful without being preachy, and an angry indictment of the shuttered world we've built ourselves.

After a competitive casting process, the roles are eventually allocated, and the prisoners begin exploring the text, finding in its tale of fraternity, power and betrayal parallels to their own lives and stories. Hardened criminals, many with links to organised crime, these actors find great motivation in performing the play. An interesting docufiction that is both an intelligent meta-narrative feat and an important record of a real production - the staging of Shakespeare in a prison. But above all, it shows how Art can have a transforming impact on even the most unexpected of people.

'Caesar Must Die'. A skillful blurring of documentary and scripted material in this meta, exploratory take on 'Julius Caesar'.

I really liked this. I didn't love it though, the main reason being I didn't feel I got to know the characters, and form that emotional attachment. Your introduction is the casting process, and maybe the lines were *too* skillfully blurred for me to form that attachment as it went along. I wanted them to "break character" for lack of a better phrase more often, and get to know them. No doubt the fourth wall was broken occasionally, but I couldn't follow them on their journey as much as I'd like to have.

Taviani Brothers'2012 Golden Berlin Bear winner, saw the screening in this year's KVIFF, an intensely conceptual piece which recounts a play of "Julius Caesar"done by all-male prisoners. Shot entirely in Black & White, the film generates a certain art form extremity of blurring the boundary between play and film, and takes advantages of the indoor settings (which almost encompasses the entire film except for a few shots), the final result is gratifyingly diverting, both the film and the play-in-the-film.

I have only watched one Taviani Brothers' film before, ALLONSANFAN (1974, a 5/10). So I need to do more homework to comment on their style or expound on their near 60 years long walk- of-life. Simply single out this film, its artistic frontier has transcended other peers and condensed into a puristic absorption on the material itself, namely, the characters of the play and the individual prisoners who take on the roles, and strikingly their distinctions and similarities are undone in a yet refrained way. There are affluent theatrical nuisances in the film, although it only runs a scant 76 minutes, the film successfully conveys its ethos and every second counts.

Salvatore Striano stars the leading role as Bruto, his rough-edged dedication is imperfect but authentic, other supporters, the stand-outs are Cosimo Rega's Cassio and Juan Dario Bonetti's Decio, but by and large the amateur antics are put into the right place, and the absorbing original score by Giuliano Taviani and Carmelo Travia also lifts the film into a great adaption from Shakespeare's cannon. It's a true blessing to justify the fact that directors could surpass themselves even at their octogenarian years.

Storyline
Follow a week in the life of a young folk singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961. Guitar in tow, huddled against the unforgiving New York winter, he is struggling to make it as a musician against seemingly insurmountable obstacles -- some of them of his own making.

A movie about a 1960s folk singer featuring great music and directed by the Coens? This movie can't come out soon enough. It doesn't sound like the plot of a typical Coen brothers movie, but it sounds great. I'm really interested to see this.

The Coen brothers' new movie ranks with their very best in its nearly pitch-perfect balance of biting satirical humour and deep reserves of feeling.

The brothers have created a character who's hard to love and a bit of a chore to invest in for an hour and 45 minutes. Like the old songs in his repertoire, he's familiar, not new, but he quickly gets old and tiresome.

The Coens have given us a melancholic, sometimes cruel, often hilarious counterfactual version of music history. It's a what-if imagining of a cultural also-ran that maybe tells us more about the truth than the facts themselves ever could.

Inside Llewyn Davis isn't about someone trying to make it big, but someone just trying to make it, and the Coens celebrate the hard road that can inspire great art.The filmmaking duo's new movie features a protagonist far more flawed and self-defeating, but thanks to a sterling lead performance from Oscar Isaac, the Coen brothers have once again delivered an impressively nuanced character study.

The film is thoughtful and evocative, just as the directorial duo's other period offerings, and to call it a low key affair, packed with charm is not to do the film any disservice. If O Brother, Where Art Thou was loosely based on The Odyssey, I think Inside Llewyn Davis is the Coen Brothers' Alice in Wonderland,While it might be their most slight and unfocused effort in almost ten years, given their corpus of work therein, it's difficult to feel too short-changed about that.An ode to art for art's sake, Inside Llewyn Davis is the most innocent movie of the Coens' career, which in their case is a downright radical achievement.

A technical failure has endangered the lives of the people on board Peninsula Flight 2549. The pilots are striving, along with their colleagues in the Control Center, to find a solution. The flight attendants and the chief steward are atypical, baroque characters who, in the face of danger, try to forget their own personal problems and devote themselves body and soul to the task of making the flight as enjoyable as possible for the passengers, while they wait for a solution. Life in the clouds is as complicated as it is at ground level, and for the same reasons, which could be summarized in two: sex and death.

My amusement watching this film was derived from the reaction of the so called "discerning" Brighton audience who laughed at the most obvious as if they were teenagers watching their first shallow American blockbuster heavy on fart and sex references. To say it was pathetic is letting it off lightly. Maybe women make up a big portion of Almodovar's fan club but the way they seemed to let him get away with his frivolous treatment of male rape and drug rape astonished me. There's no doubt that he has produced decent work in the past but, rather like Lucas, he seems to have succumbed to the puerile and obvious.

If Volver was a little too art-house, Broken embraces a little too emotional and The Skin I live in just that little too odd for you and you crave the old days of Dark Habits, Matador and Tie me up! Tie me down!, Well then good news Pedro Almodóvar fans, he's back to his raunchy, over the top unashamedly camp self! Not that he has ever stopped being any of those things, but here in I'm so excited it really does feel like he's gone back in time and made a film like the ones he made that made us fall in love with him the first time round. I'm so excited mixes every genres under the sun and almost feels like a tribute to the elaborate, ridiculous but always fabulous Soup Operas that I guess Spain has managed to continue, where other countries seem to have forgotten. It's everything you could want from a lighthearted and outrageous Almodóvar film. An absolute pleasure for an old fan like me.

Ten easy steps show you how to make money from drugs, featuring a series of interviews with drug dealers, prison employees, and lobbyists arguing for tougher drug laws.

Looking back at the anti-drug campaigns of the '80s, I chuckle as I recall teen heartthrobs interrupting cartoons with a stern message, comparing the human brain to an egg, later fried in a pan to signify being on crack.

We've all been taught that drugs are bad and that the government and law enforcement agencies have our best interests in mind.

Presented as a highly stylized instructional film about how to get into the world of drug sales and reap the profits, Matthew Cooke's documentary, How To make Money Selling Drugs, is much more than the title implies.

Cooke's narration begins the film by asking viewers if they are interested in a rewarding job that doesn't require experience or education.

From there, we are presented with the steps in how to succeed in drug dealing. From the ground level of simple street dealing right up the food chain through bulk distribution and to the top level drug lord, each step of the way is outlined and backed up with interviews of experts that include former drug dealers and members of law enforcement.

Much of the information presented is tongue-in-cheek, with sassy narration, animation and music, yet through the comedy there's also a sense of honesty and insight into the seedy world of narcotics. It dives into the reasons why kids opt to sell drugs instead of working for minimum wage and even how the profits can sometimes outweigh the jail terms if you are caught.

The film slowly sheds the satirical facade mid-way through and shifts its focus to how drugs have been destroying society and how the current American anti-drug policies only serve to exacerbate the issue.

The U.S. government continues to spend billions of dollars on a "war" against drugs that might be better served treating addiction, as well as undertaking efforts that have proved successful elsewhere in the world – Portugal's strategy being a shining example.

How To Make Money Selling Drugs is a plea for the decriminalization of drugs, albeit presented within an entertaining package.

Cooke competently shifts from satire to understanding to subsequent outrage in a way that evokes thought and opinion from viewers, making an argument, and a film, that's difficult to dispute, despite the use of high profile celebrities as glib selling points.

This is a good movie to watch if you have nothing to do on a Saturday night. Nothing here that is out of the ordinary, but I did enjoy the interviews with the former drug dealers, kingpins, and smuggles. One of them even showed up after the movie on the last day at one of the last screenings at TIFF, this in itself was very impressive. I think that is you give it a shot you might be pleasantly surprised.

Watch Copperhead Putlocker Online Free

Watch Copperhead Putlocker Online Free,Watch Copperhead Megavideo Online Free,Copperhead is unlike any Civil War movie to date. A story of the violent passions and burning feuds that set ablaze the home front during the Civil War, Copperhead is also a timeless and deeply moving examination of the price of dissent, the place of the individual amidst the hysteria of wartime, and the terrible price of war. Based on the extraordinary novel by Harold Frederic, which the great American critic Edmund Wilson praised as a brave and singular book that "differs fundamentally from any other Civil War fiction," Copperhead is the story of Abner Beech, a stubborn and righteous farmer of Upstate New York, who defies his neighbors and his government in the bloody and contentious autumn of 1862. With Copperhead, director Ron Maxwell, who with Gettysburg and Gods and Generals established himself as our foremost cinematic interpreter of the American Civil War, takes on the War from a stunning, unexpected and richly, unforgettably humanist angle. Copperhead is a parable of the Civil War and perhaps for our own time.(c) Film Collective

200-year-old vampire mother and daughter, Clara (Arterton) and Eleanor (Ronan), are forced to flee their London home after being tracked down by a mysterious group of men who have been searching for the pair through the centuries. The pair hitch a ride to a coastal town where a lonely young man, Noel (Mays), invites them to stay in his family's abandoned guesthouse. Clara soon rounds up the town's prostitutes and turns the guesthouse into a thriving brothel while Eleanor enrolls in a writing school and befriends a young leukemia sufferer, Frank (Jones).

I have to confess I had given up hope of ever enjoying a vampire movie again, thanks to the genre's recent dilution through the 'Twilight' series and its saturation on T.V. In recent times, the vampire has become a brooding bore, a development which ironically began with Jordan's 1994 'Interview with the Vampire'. The director's latest film feels like something of an apology for the monster he created with the mood of that film. 'Byzantium' gives us a modern "emo-vamp", courtesy of Ronan (finally finding a decent role after a string of duds like 'The Host' and 'The Lovely Bones'), but in Arterton we have a reminder of how thrilling and sexual this type of tale once was. Arterton's performance is electric; there hasn't been a vamp this sexy, or scary, since the heyday of Ingrid Pitt. She tears up every scene she appears in as she follows a pseudo-feminist form of revenge on the men she sees as exploiting females (we see her character corrupted into prostitution at a young age). Ronan, on the other hand, has a novel way of feeding her bloodlust; helping her elderly victims with a form of assisted suicide.
There are nods to classic vampire films (the seaside setting is an obvious nod to Harry Kumel's 'Daughters of Darkness', and the gothic flashbacks recall the glory days of Hammer), and barbed jibes at the current watered down Pattinson representation of the vampire (meeting Ronan's boyfriend, the pale faced Jones, Arterton mocks "you're just the type Eleanor goes for, as sexy as a pair of shoes"). Jordan even references his own 'The Company of Wolves', clothing Ronan in a red-hooded jacket. He also gives us not one, but two, shamelessly fake, decapitated rubber heads. This is clearly a director working in a genre he loves, whilst remembering to keep it fun, something many of today's horror film-makers seem to have forgotten.

Clara: "Iv'e got a good feeling about this place".
Elanor: "You said that about the last one."

'Byzantium' a past name of Istanbul and also the name of the hotel in this film. I have to admit my knowledge of anything about this film prior to watching it was practically zero. All i knew about this film was that it was about mother and daughter who are vampires. That's pretty much it i didn't even watch the trailer. Which i suppose begs the question why the hell did i even bother watching it?

Well i hoped the poster would tell me all i needed to know. I got a fairly realistic bleak feeling from it, and in a world where vampires have been reduced to floppy chalk faced posers - i feel like i owe the director that i give him a chance. As i said it follows this mother daughter team 'Clara' and 'Eleanor'('Gemma Arterton'/'Saoirse Ronan'). They are on the run from an organization known as 'The Brotherhood' who of which are vampires themselves. It's not a particularly quickly paced film it has an easy, steady flow to it and advances the story at a pace very suited to the dark, bleak style the film has. Something i really appreciated about it was they aren't blood thirsty, they don't have a inherent evil personality and they aren't ridiculously strong. They have a vulnerability to them rightfully so, making the intended compassion a realistic option. It's not all great though some scenes like the second time 'Elanor' writes out her story seemed a bit pointless as it was a given by then that she does it on a regular basis. And i find it hard to believe that they wouldn't cover up there tracks in any way. But they aren't plot breaking problems. I was a bit disappointed that 'Elanor's' flashbacks weren't explained and just seem to served as something interesting for the audience to mull over whether it's actually relevant. My favourite aspect to the film though is how it ends there is very little in the way of action and the tension offers are little bits but at the end it brings those elements together.

The visuals are something to be admired as well, they may not be all sparkly and brightly coloured landscapes but there's a sort of muted beauty to them. The soft colours and the bleak, dark buildings make for a really nice contrast as well as a reflection on the two main characters. Acting wise there's nothing wrong here, 'Gemma' and 'Saoirse' are great and the rest are convincing in there roles and seem really well matched to the characters.

'Byzantium' is a good vampire in a time where they've become over used and tiresome. The realistic and bleak look at the potential life of a vampire. There's a nice easy, soak-able pacing to the film and nice, muted, de-saturated and dark and desperate feel to the locations that really bring the message across. Some may view this as 'boring' but it's a nice change of pace for the flailing vampire genre.

 Storyline
The use of dead car crash victims in the Morgan Brothers' "Blood and Bone" fertiliser has been a huge boon to business. But it's been months since their last find and an important new customer is waiting on a delivery. When Reg Morgan, the junior partner in the business, comes across three young people stranded on a remote country road, he sees a radical solution to their supply problems, and a way of finally gaining the respect of his bossy big brother, Lindsay. But things don't quite go to plan when Reg starts forming an attachment with one of their captives, Sophie. Reg must now make a decision: go through with the plan and finally win Lindsay's approval, or save the kids and destroy everything the brothers have worked for. They're not psycho killers... they're just small business operators.

I saw this film at the Brussels fantastic film festival 2013 (BIFFF). It was announced as a Horror movie, but you are mistaken if you want something sinister. Everything happens in broad daylight. On the other hand, there was sufficient blood&gore to let it fall under the Horror category. Still, I found it more of a Comedy rather than anything else.

The plot elements were cleverly employed, like the use of human bodies (from travel accidents, at first) to "improve" the fertilizer that the two brothers produce. They have a lot of success with it, and demand is rising. Due to the latter, any human body that is found along the road that does not move, is carried away without proper medical review. That is where the story starts, soon involving three hitch hikers who pose an imminent danger to their secret operations. They thus become potential ingredients for their fertilizer production process. Though the cutting up of bodies is only shown once and not very directly, you can expect an abundance of blood sprayed around, tainting most of the bystanders who have every reason to assume they are next in line. Those movie lovers fainting on the sight of blood, are better off when they avoid this one.

The real secret ingredient of this film, however, is the humor that is incorporated all over the story, and works very well in hiding there is no real story to tell. Things happen in a logical sequence, though, but different from what we expected upfront. That is precisely the most important feature of this film. It is a Comedy rather than a Horror movie, is my conclusion, with the blood&gore only as binding element.

All in all, I found this Horror very enjoyable. I usually try to steer clear of blood&gore movies, but this time it is not the central theme that binds the scenes, unlike some other movies with no recognizable story line other than providing for reasons to miserably end other people's lives. In other words, the blood&gore is more entourage here than anything else. The relationship between the two fertilizer making brothers is much more important, as is the hasty and uncoordinated way they try to cover their tracks when the darker side of their business might be exposed. Along the line we witness various ways in which the younger brother tries to show initiative, in an attempt to outsmart his brother who obviously has the lead in everything. And the people who are so unlucky to get involved in their "factory", mostly fail to survive the encounter with all limbs intact, or even to escape alive for that matter. Hilarious scenes throughout, in spite of the darker aspects of the plot.
